Ce roman si prenant raconte l’histoire du danseur Rudolf Noureïev. Plutôt que de produire une biographie de plus avec son lot de lacunes, interprétations, longueurs et polémiques, Colum McCann a plutôt décidé d’écrire un roman, et il a bien fait. Il a ainsi bâti sur la passion qu’il avait de ce danseur d’exception un livre qui n’est pas forcément une peinture exacte de la réalité mais un mélange de fiction et de faits avérés. Il a pu ainsi véritablement mettre en scène Rudolf Noureïev comme il l’entendait ou l’imaginait. Sa famille, son éducation, ses amis, ses conquêtes et ses folies passent ainsi par la plume de ce brillant auteur qui nous fait vivre avec fougue l’existence d’un être aussi passionné qu’il est possible d’être.

Jeune prodige mort du sida

Et à la base, la biographie de ce danseur est une trame idéale de roman. Un jeune prodige russe aux origines modestes qui enflamme le Kirov, puis s’enfuit à l’ouest lors d’une tournée. Un danseur qui vit ensuite une existence de star et de diva des opéras du monde entier. Il fréquente Warhol, Jagger et la clique new-yorkaise underground dans les années 60. Il rencontre les chefs de gouvernements de tous les pays du monde, il fraye avec la jet-set de New York, Paris et Londres, il copine avec des acteurs et des artistes renommés. Il gagne surtout un pognon fou qu’il claque en appartements, fringues, œuvres d’art et autres extravagances. Il fait étalage de son caractère impossible, de ses caprices insupportables, de son obsession sexuelle et de son homosexualité en multipliant les amants, les virées en backrooms et les interdits de tout genre. Il meurt du sida dans les années 90, mais toujours aussi flamboyant et mythique.

Un début surprenant

Comme Colum McCann écrit un roman, il raconte ce qu’il veut, commence et finit comme il le désire, et cela donne un roman d’une force stupéfiante. En effet, on sait que la base est réelle et on est donc encore plus emporté par les éléments romanesques (véritables, inventés, fusionnés, altérés mais on s’en balance) qui viennent étayer les faits. Ainsi le roman débute par une description extraordinaire des conditions de vie des soldats russes pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, et celle de son père qui est un de ses vétérans. Il ne se termine pas par la mort du danseur…

Ce commencement est terrible. On vit avec un réalisme troublant les sensations de ces soldats qui sont amenés à une déchéance sans nom. Il pose ainsi le décor de l’enfance de Rudik qui dansait à 6 ans dans les hôpitaux pour les soldats qui rentraient du front. Il passe alors de la danse folklorique à la danse classique en rencontrant une ancienne danseuse étoile et son mari qui le prennent alors sous son aile. Ils remarquent déjà le talent, la passion et aussi les travers de ce tout jeune homme (son caractère monstrueux et aussi ses tendances inverties). Ce jeune homme qui se fait frapper tous les jours par son père qui veut en faire un homme, et qui n’accepte pas la passion de son entêté de fils. Ainsi toute la vie du danseur est marquée par cette attitude double de ses proches. Ils l’admirent et le détestent en même temps.

Toute cette partie du roman, celle de l’initiation en quelque sorte, fait penser au film « Billy Elliot ». On y retrouve la même innocente passion du gamin, ses difficultés avec sa famille et cet orgueil du danseur étoile qu’on voit déjà poindre. Chaque réussite de Rudik, chaque étape de cette lente évolution et maturation de danseur donne lieu à de superbes passages.

Passion communicative

D’ailleurs ce qui ressort principalement de l’écriture du bouquin est la passion communicative avec laquelle l’auteur raconte son histoire. Le style et la violence des descriptions, la manière dont il virevolte avec ses phrases sont autant de facteurs qui contribuent à nous faire connaître mais aussi vivre et sentir les différents moments de la vie de Noureïev. Le tout avec une acuité que je ne soupçonnais même pas avant de l’expérimenter par moi-même.

L’auteur alterne pendant tout le roman entre une dizaine de narrateurs. Ils se succèdent sans repères précis (russe, français, américain…), parfois reviennent à plusieurs années d’écart, et ils sont simplement séparés d’un saut de ligne supplémentaire. Mais en quelques phrases et indications, on sait que c’est un autre protagoniste qui s’exprime. En effet, le style se modifie immédiatement et l’auteur instille subtilement les nouvelles relations entre les personnages, et nous fait comprendre qui est celui qui « parle ». Le procédé est terriblement efficace et, curieusement, je n’ai jamais perdu le fil.

J’ai adoré ce roman. Tout m’a plu. La vie de Noureïev que je ne connaissais que par bribe, et surtout racontée de cette manière m’a fasciné. Je me fous de savoir que tout n’est peut-être pas vrai, ce n’est vraiment pas très important. Et plus globalement, le talent de l’auteur m’a conquis, j’avais rarement lu un roman dont le style et la forme portaient et servaient autant le fond. Le roman est certes hagiographique, et je suppose qu’il a fallut que l’auteur ait une certaine passion pour Noureïev pour l’écrire, mais il n’est pas lèche-botte (ou encomiastique) ni complaisant. Il s’arrête exactement où il faut pour que la légende reste intacte, et que le danseur, même malade, en fin de course et blessé, s’arrête immortalisé dans un saut, au firmament.
