J’ai réagi une bannière du jour de Google qui célèbre ainsi l’anniversaire de Louis Braille (1809-1852). Cela a fait tilt, car l’un des premiers bouquins (en 1986, j’avais 10 ans) qui m’ait énormément plu et que j’ai lu une bonne cinquantaine de fois est « Louis Braille, l’enfant de la nuit ». Il s’agit en effet d’un petit livre pour gamins, de Margaret Davidson, qui raconte l’histoire de ce garçon devenu aveugle suite à un accident à l’âge de 3 ans, et son opiniâtreté à découvrir un moyen de lire pour les aveugles. Et au final, Louis Braille devient l’inventeur de l’alphabet qui porte son nom et a changé la vie de millions de gens. J’en ai des frissons rien qu’à écrire ces lignes tant je me souviens des sensations que m’avait procurées ce bouquin.

Idéal pour les enfants

Le récit est très bien écrit, et très simple à lire, donc idéal pour son public cible (les ch’tites n’enfants). Le récit circonstancié de la vie de cet homme, dont les accomplissements incroyables eurent lieu alors qu’il était adolescent, est porteur de beaucoup d’espoir. Ce livre distille des sentiments très forts sans mièvrerie, et explique le dur combat de Louis pour non seulement créer son alphabet, mais ensuite pour le faire accepter par une administration, comble du comble, sourde et muette.

Pour enfants donc, mais pas débile du tout, la narration au contraire respecte les faits réels d’une histoire pas toujours rose, et d’un personnage au caractère bien trempé. Outre cela, les dessins d’André Dahan viennent remarquablement illustrer le texte de Margaret Davidson sans le dénaturer ou en prendre le dessus. J’ai scanné le bouquin qui est chez moi, et dont l’édition date de 1983 (l’original date de 1971). Et c’est en le cherchant ce soir que j’ai réalisé qu’il m’avait inconsciemment suivi depuis 20 ans. Mon plus vieux compagnon de lecture, et je n’en avais même pas conscience. C’est un signe.

Le dos de l’ouvrage reproduit l’alphabet Braille en relief, et ainsi gamin j’ai passé des semaines à toucher ces matrices de points la nuit pour les apprendre…

Cette lecture a ensuite fortement influencé ma fascination pour Helen Keller et son histoire. Le film « Miracle en Alabama » que j’ai déjà évoqué reste une de mes œuvres cultes.

Donc si vous avez des enfants… n’hésitez pas, il est toujours édité et réédité.
