Cela faisait longtemps que je n’avais pas lu de SF, et ça commençait à me manquer. Mon problème dans ce domaine c’est que j’en suis féru, mais d’une frange bien particulière. En effet, je n’aime pas les récits modernes avec de l’informatique ou des histoires de web, et je n’aime pas non plus la « Fantasy », non ce qui me correspond le plus, ce sont les auteurs américains des années 50 à 70. Donc en figure de proue : Asimov, K. Dick, D. Simak, Silverberg, Herbert etc. J’aime les récits de voyages dans l’espace mais surtout d’histoires dans des mondes extraterrestres qui ne sont que des prétextes à des critiques sociales « actuelles ». « Actuelles » car souvent il s’agit d’une actualité des années où le livre a été écrit (évidemment), et il est extraordinaire de lire entre les lignes la peur de la bombe atomique des années 50 dans des récits qui sont censés se passer dans des milliers d’années ou sur d’autres planètes.

Asimov mon préféré

Asimov est mon chouchou car j’ai dévoré toutes ses histoires de Robots, et j’ai un penchant particulier pour la Psychohistoire (et le cycle Fondation, même si ça devient trop chiant à la fin à mon goût). Donc je fouillais la keufna à la recherche d’un p’tit roman que je n’avais pas encore lu, et je suis tombé sur celui-ci : Les courants de l’espace. Quelle heureuse surprise, je l’ai lu en quelques heures, et comme d’habitude Asimov a pondu là une petite merveille.

Florina le joyaux

La planète Florina est un des joyaux de la galaxie. En effet c’est l’unique planète sur laquelle on peut cultiver le Kyrt. Cette cellulose a de remarquables propriétés quand elle est correctement travaillée, et peut autant servir pour le textile, que pour remplacer des métaux ou du verre dans d’autres usages. Le Kyrt est une ressource qui est rare et donc très chère et courue, essentielle à l’économie galactique. Du coup Florina est tombée il y a des centaines d’années sous le joug de la planète Sark. Les Sarkites exploitent donc le Kyrt et ont réduit les floriniens à l’état de travailleurs soumis et respectueux, en les élevant dans la peur et la servilité, comme des citoyens de basses castes. Il y a beaucoup de manœuvres politiques pour tenter de s’emparer de cette planète, et Trantor notamment qui possède un empire qui fait la moitié de la galaxie est très intéressé…

Un jour un spatio-analyste découvre que Florina risque un grand danger, mais ce dernier se fait mystérieusement psychosonder et perd la mémoire. Il est abandonné sur Florina et ère comme un demeuré. Il est appelé Rik, et est recueilli par une jeune paysanne, Lona, et le Prud’homme du village (le chef). Mais au bout d’un an, tandis que l’univers est toujours à sa recherche, il recouvre peu à peu la mémoire.

Il ferait un film remarquable

Ce roman ferait un remarquable film, de par ses personnages, sa construction et sa puissance narrative. Asimov est reconnaissable tant dans la structure de son récit que dans ce qu’il raconte. L’intrigue est passionnante et il est difficile de refermer le bouquin (pour aller au boulot, trop dur !) comme ça. Surtout, on lit clairement entre les lignes sa dénonciation du racisme (la complexion des indigènes est en question) mais aussi plus largement de la colonisation et de l’exploitation des ressources d’autrui… En plus des tractations politiques et machinations diplomatiques à l’échelle galactique qui ressemblent à s’y méprendre à nos propres défenses d’intérêt et machiavélismes économiques internationaux. (Putain, j’ai fait une sacrée phrase là !) Quand on réalise que c’est un bouquin de 1952…

Similitudes avec Dunes ?

Mais surtout ce qui m’a frappé c’est la ressemblance entre l’univers décrit par Asimov, avec notamment la dépendance économique de Florina, et celui de Dune et de l’Epice dans le roman de Frank Herbert. Même si l’usage n’est pas le même, et que le roman d’Herbert a une portée bien plus importante (une drogue qui ouvre à la prescience, et au final permet à ses junkies de voyager sans se déplacer… ça de la trouvaille !), on retrouve de frappantes similitudes. Et rajoutez à cela un petit côté « Total Recall » avec cette histoire de psychosonde qui efface la mémoire, mémoire qui revient peu à peu.

J’ai pensé que je n’étais pas le seul à avoir pensé à cela, et en cherchant un peu (kyrt+spice) je n’ai finalement trouvé qu’une occurrence à ce passionnant sujet ! (Honteuuuuuux ! Et par contre, je suis le premier français !) Mais c’est assez drôle, car on en dit finalement la même chose.

Kyrt, seemingly a very special kind of cotton, is important because it can replace anything, glass, metal plastic, given proper processing. Sounds much like Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, the difference being that “Kyrt” is not needed for space travel, unlike the “Spice”. Still, everyone wants to have it for its versatility.

Conclusion : Isaac t’as trop déchiré ta mère sur ce coup là encore.

En tout cas, plonger dans ce roman, et la tête dans les étoiles, m’a donné envie de relire de la SF. Il ne s’agit vraiment pas d’une littérature mineure pour moi, mais alors vraiment pas.
